In the run-up to 20 September

Nijmegen inner city (including Valkhofpark, Kelfkensbos)
During the run-up to 20 September the city authorities will be organising a varied programme bringing this chapter in Nijmegen’s history to life once more.

Schools project
A special programme has been designed by the city to raise awareness of the Second World War, and in particular of the vicissitudes of Nijmegen, among primary school children. This will occur through a programme of lessons leading up to 20 September.

Commemoration of the Waal crossing together with ‘De Oversteek’ primary school

Commemorating one of the most heroic actions by the Allies during the Second World War, the illustrious Waal Crossing, occurs at the Waal Memorial on the Oosterhoutsedijk. In collaboration with the Ministry of Defence, American veterans will again cross the Waal by boat. On the northern bank they will be received by children. A commemorative ceremony will then be held at the memorial, for which admission tickets are required. Read more.

The Nijmegen Children’s Plays

A unique liberation festival is being organised in Nijmegen’s inner city, aimed at children from Nijmegen. A special programme will involve primary school children in the city’s history. For many of them this concludes in a special way a series of lessons conducted by Nijmegen primary schools in recent weeks.

The Nijmegen Children’s Plays will be concluded with the presentation of prizes and a scintillating performance by YES-R.

Commemoration of the Liberation of Nijmegen

The liberation of Nijmegen will be commemorated at the war memorial on the Traianusplein square in the city. Both veterans and children will play a role in the ceremony, which will conclude with a spectacular parade, in which the veterans and primary school children will cross the Waal by the Waal Bridge in vehicles of the period.
